It's nice when you think you know what's wrong and find the broken part that you hoped to find. So I am not surprised to find half of them failed When one fails it puts more stress on the remaining one starting a cascade of failures. I suspect that the springs are like spokes on a cycle wheel. Turns out the three around that spring were bad too. You could see one of them was shot by looking at it, half the spring being missing. Yesterday it all came together and we got the patient completely opened up. The bolt actually came out easily once you could get to it. Getting to it was more involved than we hoped, because of one bolt that had spent 40 years in bilge water. We concluded that it was likely the damper plate between the flywheel and the gearbox. In September, on a sea trial run, I was throttling up and there was a bang both heard and felt. We have been slowly doing upgrades and deferred (40 years deferred) maintenance work in the engine room of Leketoy, my Monk-designed Roughwater 35.
